Narcissistic Abuse Recovery

What You’ve Been Calling a Rough Patch Has Working Parts

You called it a rough patch, then a personality difference, then something about the pressure he was under.

What you were living inside ran on a small set of repeatable moves.

Last night’s conversation rewritten by morning, an apology that arrives with a bill attached, your question answered with a question until you lose track of what you asked.

A move that repeats is a move you can learn to spot.

Why You Couldn’t See It

From inside your relationship, those moves were nearly impossible to catch.
That’s how they work.
Nobody ever sat you down and taught you their names.
Without names, you reached for the explanation closest to hand, and the closest one was you.

You’re Grieving a Person and a Future at the Same Time

Something else in this has no obvious name either.

You’re grieving who you believed they were, along with the life you had already started building around them.

That grief is real, and it gets room in this work.

You’ll Learn the Moves by Name

Fourteen years as a school counselor left me a teacher before anything else.

So a good part of our early sessions is plain explanation, built around the conversations you bring me.

We’ll slow those conversations down until you can see the actual move inside them: where the subject changed, where the blame landed, where you started apologizing.

Understanding why something happens is what lets you catch it the next time.

One Belief Turns Your Boundaries into Guilt

Underneath most of this sits a belief you’ve never examined, that your opinions, your limits, and your preferences are up for negotiation.

Cognitive behavioral work here is learning to talk back to that belief, which speaks up loudest the moment you tell someone no.

One client told me, “Thank you so much for giving me permission to tell my ex no. That never even crossed my mind.”

That right had been hers the whole time, and it’s yours too.

Catch the Move While It’s Still in the Room

The change my clients tend to notice first is timing.
The move happens, and you clock it as it lands instead of three days later in the shower.
You can read a manipulation you once believed without turning it into evidence against your own judgment.
What this work builds is the kind of trust in yourself that holds under pressure.

Start by Telling Me What’s Been Going On

Naming it out loud is where this starts, and one sentence about what’s been happening is enough to begin.
